– YOU’RE INVITED TO MARCH 7 PUBLIC MEETING –

SHARE YOUR CONCERNS ABOUT HOW MINING IS AFFECTING BASTROP’S WATER, AIR, FARMLAND, HISTORIC CEMETERIES, WILDLIFE AND ROADS

NO MORE ROCK CRUSHERS!

TAKE ACTION TO SAVE OUR HISTORIC NEIGHBORHOODS AND

RECREATIONAL AREAS FROM MINING

What:  Travis Materials, a mining company with multiple permit violations, has requested an air permit to add another rock and cement crusher to FM 969 in Bastrop County. The City of Bastrop passed a resolution expressing concerns about the location, environmental impacts, road safety, and stormwater management of this request. Neighbors are concerned that this proposed plant, near Wilbarger Bend Road, will have negative impacts upon:

  • Low-income residents that live near the noise and air pollution of three mining operations and can not afford a lawyer to fight for their health and safety.

  • School children at nearby schoolbus stop who will be subject to silica air pollution, dangerous truck traffic

  • Neighbors and long-time residents of historic Utley, an African-American Freedom Colony

  • City of Bastrop residents because flooding will increase due to damage to the floodplain upstream

  • Visitors seeking to enjoy Bastrop’s premier recreational areas along Colorado River, near Utley Bridge

  • Rock crusher workers who suffer from inhaling silca and other pollutants

  • Bald eagles (currently nesting) and other wildlife on Wilbarger Bend

  • Certified organic farms and ranchers, local food businesses, including Green Gate Farms and Middle Ground Farm.

Given current policies, this meeting is the only opportunity for the public to question miners and share concerns about adding a rock crusher to our neighborhood.
